Game Developer Group States Using NFTs in Games Present Ethical Issues CryptoGlobe

The International Game Developers Association (IGDA), a group joined by a number of game developers and programmers from companies around the world, has looked into the use of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) in the industry of the game. The group’s director said that introducing these elements into game projects presents “ethical issues”, and it could also represent a “socio-political explosion waiting to happen”.

IGDA’s view on NFTs

One of the largest groups made up of game developers and programmers has given its opinion on including NFTs in games, as some companies have started doing recently. The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) believes that these items could introduce problems into gaming activity.

According to IGDA Acting Director Jakin Vela, the organization plans to take steps to raise awareness of the problems that NFT games could bring. Vela Told Technical Ars:

[IGDA is] in the process of revising our position to be a bit stronger because there are actually a lot of ethical issues that come with NFTs.

Another of the organization’s concerns is the “pyramid scheme” element that some of these games present to their participants, in the sense that some of them require an ever-growing user base to keep their games afloat. stand-alone economies, such as some games. games to win (P2E).

According to Vela, gamers are also affected by the unregulated nature of the NFT environment, where gamers can put all their professional activity into uncertain ecosystems outside of any official protection. This, along with other aspects, could create a “socio-political explosion”.

The future of gaming

While some companies have addressed the introduction of NFTs and play-to-earn games as an important part of the future of gaming, there have been strong reactions from groups inside the game who are opposed to this new trend for several reasons. The IGDA was part of this opposition from within the industry and Posted a call to action statement in July 2021. At the time, the organization said:

NFTs should never be used when a simple and much less expensive database table can be maintained to provide the same information and benefits.

In the same statement, the organization recommends Proof-of-Stake (PoS)-based networks instead of Proof-of-Work (PoW) blockchains due to their energy efficiency. However, other industry insiders are convinced that gamers are rejecting these ideas due to their lack of knowledge about the benefits the technology could bring them. This is the opinion of Nicolas Pouard, manager in charge of blockchain developments at Ubisoft.
