RALEIGH, NC (WITN) — Mega Millions’ rise continues as it hit the 10th biggest jackpot in the game’s 20-year history.
Local customers tried their luck at winning big on Friday.
Greenville cashier Michelle Gayhardt said she was encouraging people to buy a ticket.
“It’s a good chance if they can win, but you have to play to win, if you don’t play you can’t win,” Gayhardt said. “You have to get your two bucks or three bucks and try to get a ticket to make money. If you win, you win otherwise you could have a piece of the pie.
Client, Bernard Perkins said he couldn’t pass up a chance to win.
“If you want to play, just play,” Perkins said. “Two dollars won’t hurt, you know.”
The odds of hitting the winning jackpot ticket are one in 302.5 million, but customers remained optimistic. Some even thought in advance what they would do with the money.
“If I win the first thing I would do is thank God, blessings be to God and after that I would take care of my whole family,” Perkins said. “After that, I left, I left.”
With inflation rates exceeding nine percent recently, Gayhardt said the idea of winning Mega Millions is easy for customers to fantasize about.
“It might give them a little courage, just a little more money,” Gayhardt said. “Times are tough these days with gas prices, food prices and rents going up.”
Nearly 35,000 tickets were sold for Tuesday’s draw, but there is still no jackpot winner. If one lucky person gets the ticket this week, they’ll receive $480 million in annuity or $276 million in cash.
“Anytime you start talking about one of the top 10 Mega Millions jackpots in history, you know it’s going to change your life,” said Mark Michalko, Executive Director of NC Education Lottery.
